Genetic and environmental factors towards development of disease, genetic susceptibility to disease; mammalian tissue culture cell-based bioassays, genetic markers. “Genetic susceptibility to type 1 diabetes in Puerto Rican children” / “Genotyping of the HLA DQB1Locus in Type 1 Diabetic Puerto Rican Children” / “Molecular Subtyping of HLA-DQA1 Locus in Type 1 Diabetic Families” / “Effects of natural extracts in mamalian cell tissue metabolism.”

ABOUT
Dr. Alma L. Santiago Cortés was born in Ponce. Obtained her BS in Industrial Microbiology at the RUM. She worked as research technician for three years in HIV research. Then obtained a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at Ponce School of Medicine. Dr. Santiago Cortés is a faculty member in the Department of Biology since 1999. She has been director of CEIBA since 2008.

Biomolecules with the potential for agriculture and health (BIOPROSPECTING)

CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS
Micropropagation of plantain, orchids and ferns. Isolation of fungi from cultivated and non-cultivated soils and identification of potential bioactive compounds.

ABOUT
Prof. Berríos obtained her BS and MS in Biology, with a concentration in Mycology at the RUM. Prof. Berrios has twenty one years experience in the pharmaceutical industry, of which seventeen were in microbiology quality and control. Her ample industrial experience include: Microbiology testing, Investigations, CAPA; Finished Product Stability and Annual Product Review; American Society for Quality (ASQ) Exam Reviewer and Proctor. She is certified by the ASQ as: GMP Professional and Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP). Prof. Berríos joined PCUPR’s biotechnology team in 2010.

CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS
Elucidating unidentified function of eighteen genes of Debaryomyces hansenii and their role in osmoadaptation / Evaluating potential applications of yeasts in agriculture and biomedical sciences.

ABOUT
Born in Jayuya. With a a bachelor degree from RUM, after college she joined the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary, a Secular Institute of the Catholic Church. Her internship as a Medical Technologist was done at South Dakota. Her Master Degree in Biology is also from RUM and her Ph.D. from the Biotechnology Institute at University Autónoma of Nuevo Leon, México. She joined PCUPR in January 2010, as faculty member of the Biotechnology Program.

BACKGROUND:

Dr. Gladys Chompré was born in Ponce. She received a bachelor degree in Chemistry from University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. For eleven years she worked as a laboratorysupervisor in different research projects at Ponce School of Medicine and Health Sciences. This inspired her to acquired a PhD in Biomedical Sciences at that same university. Her thesis work was in NeuroAIDS Research. In 2013, she joined PCUPR’s Biotechnology Program.
